A survey of one third of the UK road networks, of motorways and A-roads rated over 40% as inadequate. The four star rating system based on the European Road Assessment Programme gave these roads a two star rating. 11% of A- roads achieved a 4 star rating.
The Institute of Advanced Motoring are co-funding the scheme to rate all roads in the UK. IAM Trust director Neil Grieg said "When driving on inferior one and two star roads, motorists must adapt their driving to compensate for the inadequate features of the road. Drivers who understand that the risk of death or serious injury changes with the star rating of different road sections will be better informed and ultimately safer."
