David Bellamy presents the Gold Conservation Award to wardens Steve and Elaine O'Brien at Westmorland Park, Cumbria
New park wardens Steve and Elaine O'Brien were delighted to find that one of their first jobs at the Westmorland Caravan Park near Tebay was to welcome Professor David Bellamy to the park.
Professor Bellamy had called specially to present the David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award, which the park has won for the second year running.
On arriving at Westmorland Caravan Park, Professor Bellamy commented 'What an entrance to Cumbria!' He was particularly impressed with the areas around the park that have been kept as rough land which provide an excellent breeding ground for many species of flaura and fauna. He was also kind enough to share a few conservation tips along the way.
Westmorland Caravan Park is located in a peaceful countryside setting, only a short walk from the award winning Tebay Services on the northbound of the M6 between junctions 38 and 39. Westmorland Caravan Park has been able to achieve this prestigious award due to the enthusiasm of the Groups Estate Manager, John France from Penrith.
John commented 'We have introduced a number of initiatives such as sympathetic grass cutting regimes so we protect rare flowers such as the Northern Marsh Orchid. We have purposely left areas of rough grassland as a refuge for wildlife. A number of bird boxes and bird and squirrel feeders have been installed and sightings of red squirrels have been reported.
'Fallen trees and logs have been piled up to provide a home for nesting robins, and a small wildlife pond has been created, where sand lizards have been spotted. These and any other unusual sightings are logged by the park wardens.
'We have focused on energy efficiency by replacing heating timers with motion sensors, closely monitored the use of water and electricity and provided glass recycling bins for our customers.'
The 4 star Westmorland Caravan Park is a favourite with motor home owners who are looking to break a long journey to or from Scotland, especially as it nestles below Shap Summit and enjoys stunning views of the Howgill Fells.
The Park is also increasingly popular as a base to explore the nearby Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland - the three National Parks within a 30-minute drive.
Whilst staying at the park, visitors are given discount vouchers to use in the companies other sites. These include the award winning farm shops at Tebay services where guests can buy a range of local produce including lamb and beef reared on the companies own farm, only a mile away.
The Park is also a short walk from The Westmorland Hotel where visitors can have dinner in the AA rosette award winning restaurant or simply relax with a drink from the bar.
