As the popularity of 'staycationing' surges, more of us are able to take our pets on holiday with us. According to the RAC, motorists should take more precautions when it comes to the safety of our canine friends and use seatbelts to strap them into the car.
A recent RAC survey revealed that 88% of British drivers supported using a dog harness/ seat belt to keep their dog in place yet 60% have never done so.
The RAC has joined forces with Dogs Trust to create awareness among drivers of the dangers of not restraining your dogs when driving. Although the Highway Code indicates drivers should use seatbelts to restrain their pets, there is no legal requirement.
Phil Ryan, head of RAC patrols said: 'At 30mph an unrestrained 50lb border collie would be thrown forward with a force equivalent to almost nine 12 stone men.'
