Start and finish Top Car Park, Foxton Locks, six miles from the campsite
Via Cross Turnover Bridge and then pass down by the 12 locks to the Foxton Locks Inn and back past the boat lift and the stop gates
Essential equipment Map of Foxton Locks Trail printed from wow4water.net. Ordnance Survey Explorer 223 Map (1:25,000)
The wow factor You can't escape the sense of history when you spend a day beside part of Britain's wonderful canal network, and Foxton Locks has the added attraction of its 10-lock ‘staircase'.
Narrow-boat pilots must heave open the heavy gates one after the other in order to ascend or descend the Grand Union Canal on their way through South Leicestershire
Best time of year to go All year, although with great paths all the way around and no mud to traverse, it's a great place for a winter walk
Catch your breath here
Top Lock Cottage: The old lock keeper's cottage has been turned into a little café serving drinks, sandwiches and cakes
Boat Trips: These run up and down the canal on selected days from the bottom of the staircase and will ensure the perfect family day out. The standard 30-minute trip costs £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children
Foxton Locks Museum: Telling the story of its very special canal lift, as well as the waterways in general, the museum holds many archives and objects of interest and is worth a visit at some point during your walk
At the end of the day Brook Meadows Lakeside Holidays, Welford Road, Sibbertoft, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9UJ

Why stay here? This small, privately-owned campsite is open all year. It has 12 hardstanding pitches plus six more on grass for summertime use - all with electric hook-ups.
